49 fragrances I want to sample: my wishlist and comparisons

My reasoned fragrance wishlist: 49 scents to sample, comparisons with my collection and a prioritized first sampling round.

Main image for 49 fragrances I want to sample: my wishlist and comparisons

I have a list of 49 fragrances I want to sample, but not a list of 49 bottles I intend to buy. The distinction matters: as a collection grows, buying solely because a fragrance receives strong reviews or shares notes I already enjoy makes progressively less sense.

My goal is to wear each candidate on skin, compare it with fragrances I already own and discover whether it adds something new. Some fill genuine gaps; others are flankers or higher-priced references competing directly with bottles in my current collection.

Direct answer: what I would sample first

If I ordered an initial sampling round today, I would choose these twelve:

FragranceQuestion I want to answer
Maison Crivelli Oud MaracujaDoes it add enough over my Azzure Oud?
Lattafa Khamrah WahaCan the Khamrah DNA become an aquatic fresh fragrance?
Dior FahrenheitDo I genuinely enjoy its violet, leather and gasoline signature?
Bvlgari TygarDoes it justify its price against my current fresh scents?
By Kilian Angels' ShareWhat does it add over Khamrah and Khamrah Qahwa?
Tom Ford Cherry SmokeIs it the darker cherry I am missing while owning Lost Cherry?
Armaf Club de Nuit Precieux IDoes it complement or replace Club de Nuit Intense Man Extrait?
Louis Vuitton ImaginationIs it as versatile and distinctive as its reputation suggests?
Xerjoff Torino21How does a green, citrus and mint niche fresh scent perform?
Xerjoff XJ 1861 NaxosDoes honey and tobacco fit my taste?
Tom Ford Oud WoodShould I explore restrained oud before more intense options?
Parfums de Marly PercivalCan it fill the clean, versatile daily-wear role?

These are not necessarily my twelve favorite names on the list. They are the samples that would teach me the most about my taste and the gaps in my collection.

Comparison 1: completing the Khamrah family

I already own Lattafa Khamrah and Khamrah Qahwa. The original revolves around cinnamon, dates, praline, vanilla and resins; Qahwa keeps the gourmand character while adding coffee, cardamom and a darker feel.

The two flankers I want to sample move in very different directions:

FlankerExpected profileMain comparison
Khamrah DukhanSpices, pimento, incense, tobacco, praline and amberWhether smoke and tobacco add value without becoming redundant beside Qahwa
Khamrah WahaBergamot, yuzu, juniper, cucumber, sea salt, vanilla and muskWhether Khamrah can retain an identity inside an aromatic aquatic profile

Khamrah Dukhan looks like the natural extension of the darker side of my collection. The risk is that it competes too closely with Khamrah Qahwa, Asad and Rich Warm Addictive.

Khamrah Waha, released in 2026, is the more interesting experiment: citrus, cucumber and sea salt meet vanilla, tonka and amber woods. If it works, it fills a new gap instead of repeating another winter gourmand.

My priority: Waha before Dukhan.

Comparison 2: Lost Cherry against Electric Cherry and Cherry Smoke

I own Tom Ford Lost Cherry, built around dark cherry, almond, liquor, balsams and vanilla. It is distinctive, but not always the easiest choice to wear.

The other two flankers explore cherry in opposite directions:

FragranceDirectionWhat I want to test
Electric CherryBright cherry, ginger, jasmine, pink pepper and muskWhether it offers a fresher everyday cherry
Lost CherryLiqueur-like cherry, almond, balsams and vanillaMy current reference
Cherry SmokeDark cherry, saffron, leather, smoke and woodsWhether it adds depth without becoming too heavy

Electric Cherry could be the easiest spring option, but also the riskiest in value terms. Cherry Smoke is more likely to add something genuinely different.

My priority: Cherry Smoke before Electric Cherry.

Comparison 3: Club de Nuit, Aventus and Absolu Aventus

I already own Armaf Club De Nuit Intense Man Extrait, with pineapple, citrus, smoky birch, musk and ambergris. I would not sample Creed Aventus merely to discover that style; I would sample it to understand differences in quality, development and texture.

FragranceRole in the comparison
Club De Nuit Intense Man ExtraitMy current reference and the strongest value proposition
Creed AventusThe original used to measure refinement, naturalness and development
Creed Absolu Aventus 2023A denser, more citrus and spice-driven variation
Armaf Club de Nuit Precieux IArmaf's alternative associated with the Absolu Aventus territory

Absolu Aventus 2023 adds grapefruit, spices, ginger and cinnamon to the fruity-woody DNA. Sampling Precieux I alongside Absolu may therefore be more informative than comparing it only with Aventus.

My priority: sample Aventus, Absolu Aventus 2023 and Precieux I side by side, buying none blind.

Comparison 4: Azzure Oud against Oud Maracuja

My French Avenue Azzure Oud already represents the contrast between passionfruit, rose, saffron, oud, leather and amber. Maison Crivelli Oud Maracuja occupies precisely that olfactory territory as a much more expensive niche reference.

The question is not whether Oud Maracuja smells better during the first few minutes. I want to test:

  1. whether the fruit feels more natural and develops better;
  2. whether the oud and leather have greater depth;
  3. whether it remains wearable for several hours;
  4. whether the difference genuinely justifies the price increase.

This may be the most important comparison on the entire wishlist. If Oud Maracuja does not create a clear difference on skin, Azzure Oud already fills that space.

Comparison 5: Angels' Share against Khamrah and Khamrah Qahwa

By Kilian Angels' Share is a reference point for gourmand fragrances featuring cognac, cinnamon, tonka, oak, praline and vanilla. Khamrah is not an exact clone, but it occupies a similar use case and frequently appears in the same conversation.

Since I own Khamrah and Qahwa, I want to sample Angels' Share to evaluate more than similarity:

  • quality and texture of the boozy accord;
  • balance between sweetness, wood and spices;
  • development over several hours;
  • ease of wear;
  • the real difference over two much more affordable options.

I would not buy Angels' Share because of its reputation. It only makes sense if the complete experience clearly exceeds what I already own.

Comparison 6: Fahrenheit original or Fahrenheit Le Parfum

I do not own anything truly similar to Dior Fahrenheit. Its combination of violet leaf, leather, woods, citrus and the famous gasoline association represents a genuine gap.

Fahrenheit is the personality test: I want to know whether I enjoy that classic and recognizable profile. Fahrenheit Le Parfum adds suede, rum, licorice and bourbon vanilla, moving closer to my sweet preferences.

That is precisely why I would sample the original first. Le Parfum may be easier for me, but Fahrenheit could teach me something new.

The four groups in my wishlist

Organizing all 49 fragrances reveals four clear directions:

Fresh, aquatic and versatile

14 fragrances

The group that would expand my warm-weather, office and daily-wear options the most.

  • Lattafa Perfumes Khamrah Waha
  • Bvlgari Tygar
  • Lorenzo Pazzaglia Sex-Sea
  • Lorenzo Pazzaglia Black Sea
  • Parfums de Marly Percival
  • Fragrance One Office For Men
  • Yves Saint Laurent Y Le Parfum
  • Carolina Herrera Bad Boy Cobalt Parfum Electrique
  • Abercrombie & Fitch Fierce
  • Louis Vuitton Symphony
  • Louis Vuitton L'Immensite
  • Louis Vuitton Pacific Chill
  • Xerjoff Torino21
  • Louis Vuitton Imagination

Tobacco, vanilla and gourmands

17 fragrances

The family closest to my current taste, but also the one with the highest risk of redundancy.

  • Giorgio Armani Emporio Armani Stronger With You Tobacco
  • Giorgio Armani Emporio Armani Stronger With You Sandalwood
  • Azzaro The Most Wanted Eau de Parfum Intense
  • Tom Ford Tobacco Vanille
  • Lattafa Perfumes Khamrah Dukhan
  • French Avenue Cocoa Morado
  • By Kilian Smoking Hot
  • By Kilian Angels' Share
  • Montale Vanilla Cake

Leather, oud, saffron and dark profiles

10 fragrances

High-character fragrances that I would always sample before buying.

  • Maison Crivelli Oud Maracuja
  • Dior Fahrenheit Le Parfum
  • Dior Fahrenheit
  • Louis Vuitton Les Sables Roses
  • Tom Ford Fabulous
  • Tom Ford Oud Wood
  • Maison Crivelli Safran Secret
  • Louis Vuitton Ombre Nomade
  • Tom Ford Ombre Leather (2018)
  • Salvatore Ferragamo Ferragamo Spicy Leather

Fruity, cherry and artistic perfumery

8 fragrances

Particularly interesting comparisons with Lost Cherry, Club de Nuit and my fruity fragrances.

  • Armaf Club de Nuit Precieux I
  • Byredo - referencia pendiente de identificar
  • Creed Aventus
  • Creed Absolu Aventus 2023
  • Maison Crivelli Hibiscus Mahajad
  • Tom Ford Electric Cherry
  • Tom Ford Cherry Smoke
  • Xerjoff Erba Pura

This is a sampling wishlist, not a purchase plan. Expensive, intense or highly similar fragrances should earn a full bottle after several wears.

The entry written as Byredo Byredo remains unidentified. I have not converted it into another Byredo fragrance because that would invent a preference that has not been confirmed.

My strategy to avoid impulse purchases

I would use a different process depending on price and intensity:

Fragrance typeMinimum test before buying
Accessible, versatile designerTest in store and wear for one full day
Flanker similar to something I own2-3 ml sample and direct comparison
Expensive niche fresh scent5 ml decant across different days and temperatures
Oud, leather, saffron or highly intense fragrance5-10 ml decant before deciding
Very expensive bottleFinish a decant and verify I still want to wear it

I would especially avoid blind-buying Oud Maracuja, Les Sables Roses, Ombre Nomade, Arabians Tonka, Black Sea, Cherry Smoke, Hibiscus Mahajad, Safran Secret or Sex-Sea. An impressive opening does not guarantee that I want to wear the fragrance for eight hours.

The gaps I actually want to fill

After comparing the wishlist with my collection, I see four priority gaps:

  1. A genuinely special premium fresh scent. Tygar, Imagination, Torino21, Pacific Chill and L'Immensite compete for this role.
  2. A fragrance with more prominent tobacco. Naxos, Tobacco Vanille, Stronger With You Tobacco, Smoking Hot and Khamrah Dukhan would reveal which type of tobacco I prefer.
  3. A leather fragrance with identity. Fahrenheit, Ombre Leather and Spicy Leather represent very different approaches.
  4. A niche fragrance that cannot be easily substituted. Oud Maracuja, Hibiscus Mahajad, Sex-Sea, Black Sea or Les Sables Roses would need to justify that space.

I do not urgently need another vanilla gourmand. Althair, Vanilla Cake, Vanille Absolu and Vanille Fatale interest me, but they compete in a part of the collection where I already have variety.

Conclusion

This wishlist works better as a learning map than as a shopping list. The most interesting fragrances are not necessarily the most expensive or highest rated: they are the ones that answer a question about my taste or fill a genuine gap.

I will update the list as I sample them. Every fragrance should eventually move into one of three categories: I want a bottle, the decant is enough, or I am glad I sampled it without buying it.

You can see the fragrances I already own in my warm and cold weather fragrance guide. The opinions and priorities in this article are personal; linked note pyramids are references to use before testing each fragrance on skin.

I have also separated the bottles I can already imagine in my collection into my list of 34 fragrances I want to own. That list carries a stronger purchase intention; this one remains a place to discover and discard without needing to buy.

The archive of the 19 fragrances I previously owned adds another useful reference: before chasing a new release, I can check whether I have already explored a similar direction and why it left the collection.
